Tag Heuer Connected "a big mistake"

In the stuffy watch industry Peter Stas could be seen as a visionary. The CEO of Frederique Constant decisively jumped on the wearable tech train at Baselworld year ago with its fitness tracking Horological Smartwatch, and it’s a decision that’s paid off handsomely.

“Last year we grew while the whole industry went down. And I must say it’s because we had success with the Horological Smartwatch – without it we would have shrunk slightly too. But because of the new category we added we were able to grow,” Stas told Wareable at Baselworld 2016.

Swiss watches have had a rough year. The industry shrunk yet again against the backdrop of revelations that smartwatches outsold their Swiss-made counterparts for the first time in 2015. If the Swiss weren’t listening before, they sure are now. Yet Frederique Constant’s smartwatch – launched alongside a similar products from Mondaine should give any watchmaker pause for thought:

“Last year we had a first production of the Horological Smartwatch calibre and we sold 40,000 pieces – for the watch industry that’s a lot,” Stas continued.

Stas confirmed to Wareable that Frederique Constant has plans to increase its line up of Horological Smartwatches to include a ladies movement.

“With the plans for the next year that could easily grow to 100,000 pieces. So we’re extremely happy with the results,” he continued.

But just because the company has had success implementing tech into its timepieces this year, Stas isn’t jumping on board the full smartwatch bandwagon just yet. In fact, he thinks Tag Heuer’s smartwatch goes against the key strengths of the Swiss watchmaking industry.

“The Tag Heuer Connected is not nice. Frankly, I feel it’s a big mistake. They are selling an Android graphics implementation at $1,400 – the same that you can get from LG for $300. That’s not what makes the Swiss watch industry strong,” Stas warned.

“We feel our implementation retains the DNA of what makes us strong: a beautiful dial and sculpted hands, and individuality. Here in Basel you might see 5000 different watches, but Android is only Android and Apple Watch is only Apple Watch. There is only one. So that’s where Swiss industry brings something,” Stas continued.

Stas confirmed a female version of its smartwatch is landing this year

However, that doesn’t mean that Stas and Frederique Constant is anti-screen altogether, and the company has ambitious plans.

“Later this year we will have another solution as well, but we’re in the process of setting up a stronger software team in Geneva to develop new applications in Switzerland, which is important for the new regulations for Swiss Made which states that software will have to be made here too.”

While Frederique Constant got ahead of the competition by acting promptly in 2015, this year’s Baselworld saw a jump in the amount of brands experimenting with smart tech, including Movado, Fossil, Michael Kors, Nixon – as well as confirmation of plans from Hublot and Bvlgari.

“I think slowly some of our competition are catching up,” Stas said.

“Fossil are jumping in the pool and Tissot is just scratching the surface. I saw the presentation. I worked for Philips and I know the electronics background. When I saw the Tissot implementation I thought ‘this is interesting’ but we can do something better than that.

“What Fossil is doing is big. With Tag Heuer and the Connected Smartwatch they are putting a lot of effort behind that and talking about hundreds of thousands of pieces. We are happy, and we have leaned a lot, and we will develop in the right direction. But it’s still a new area we need to learn.”

Tissot Smart-Touch

Swatch technically released smartwatches last year in the form of theBellamy and Touch Zero One, but their narrow focuses (payments and volleyball) made them niche tools that you’re unlikely to buy. Flash forward to 2016, however, and it’s a different story: Swatch has introduced the Tissot Smart-Touch, its first broader-purpose smartwatch. It’s not a full-on computing device like TAG Heuer’s offering, but it’s still useful when you’re out and about. You can pair it with your phone to navigate using the watch hands and screen, including devices you’ve tagged with a special fob. Also, there’s a solar-powered weather station that delivers local conditions to the Smart-Touch’s display.

You’ll also get an altimeter and modern conveniences like automatic time updates. The battery should last up to a year on a charge, too, and you can recharge it using solar power. Tissot is asking around $1,100 to $1,200 — not a trivial sum, but the company notes that the Smart-Touch should still be useful as a watch well after the phone integration stops working.

The launch isn’t a total surprise: Swatch already said that its smartwatch plans would be modest, and it’s just following through on its promise. However, the question is whether or not the brand will continue on that path. After all, both traditional and upstart Swiss watchmakers are putting their names on more advanced devices. While Swatch doesn’t have grand expectations (it plans to sell just 20,000 to 40,000 Smart-Touch units in the device’s first year), there is the risk that it’ll seem behind the times if its peers embrace smartwatches in a big way.

Nixon Android Wear smartwatch

Lifestyle and apparel company Nixon has announced its first smartwatch powered by Google’s Android Wear platform. Dubbed Mission, the timepiece is being claimed to be the world’s first action sport smartwatch.

On the software-side, the Mission comes bundled with apps powered by Surfline, Snocountry, and Trace. These apps are geared to action sports, allowing activity-tracking as well as letting the watch to receive real-time information.

Specs-wise, the round-faced rugged smartwatch is powered by Snapdragon Wear 2100 chipset, and sports an AMOLED display with Gorilla Glass protection. The Mission will be available later this year for about $400. The device will be offered in multiple color options and with as many as 20 bands to choose from.

Under the hood, the Nixon Mission smartwatch is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 2100 underneath a round AMOLED display covered with Gorilla Glass. The outer bezel is stainless steel around a polycarbonate and stainless steel shell with a silicone band that aims for both comfort and durability. What’s more, Nixon’s taking a similar approach to customization as Motorola did with the Moto 360. You’ll be able to customize the finish and both bezel and band colors to make a unique color scheme. The customization doesn’t stop their either, as you can also set the Mission’s digital display to mimic the look of the company’s other timepieces like the 51-30, The Sentry, The Player, The Ranger and The Unit.

We’ve always pushed things that have never been done before and we’re doing it again with The Mission,” said Nixon CEO Nick Stowe. “We wanted to make our entrance into the smart category in a disciplined and purposeful way by bringing functions that are useful and true to our DNA and action sports heritage.” Stowe also said that Nixon has a “family of smart products to come,” so we’ll be hearing more about connect gadgets from the company in the future. As for the Mission, the smartwatch is making its official debut at Baselworld before going on sale this fall.
